Solheim Cup golfer gets ‘Roll, Tide’ from Nick Saban

Former Alabama All-American Cheyenne Knight was chosen by captain Stacy Lewis on Monday to play for the U.S. team in next month’s Solheim Cup.

The biennial team competition features 12 European players from the Ladies European Tour and 12 U.S. players from the LPGA Tour.

The 18th Solheim Cup will be contested Sept. 22-24 at Finca Cortesin in Casares, Spain.

Lewis included Knight among her three captain’s picks for the team, with Ally Ewing and Angel Yin also joining the nine automatic qualifiers.

“It’s been a goal of mine as long as I can remember,” Knight said, “just growing up watching the Solheim Cup, watching Stacy and (assistant captain) Angela (Stanford), fellow Texans, and just hoping I could be there one day, and I’m just so excited to represent my country. I’ve never gotten the chance to represent my country in my career. It’s the highest honor, and I’m really excited. …

“I just can’t dream of anything better. It’s been a huge goal of mine. First time to do it and can’t wait to represent Team USA.”

The LPGA introduced the 12 U.S. team members with a video featuring celebrities. Alabama football coach Nick Saban announced Knight, giving the former Crimson Tide golfer and her team a “Roll, Tide” and “Go, USA.”

The other members of the U.S. team are Lilia Vu, Nelly Korda, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang, Jennifer Kupcho, Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee, who qualified via the U.S. Solheim Cup team standings, and Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang, who qualified via the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.

A three-time All-American for the Crimson Tide, Knight was the SEC’s Player of the Year in 2017.

On July 22, Knight posted the second victory of her LPGA Tour career. She teamed with Elizabth Szokol to win the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational.
